As you may recall, Eva loves berries. She eats so many that (with our finances in mind) we decided to cut out the middle man and go straight to the source. The source, in this case, turned out to be Charlotte's Berry Farm—a nice little Pick Your Own place just outside of town that happened to have tons of bushes dripping with big, beautiful, delicious blueberries. We were lucky because it was a beautiful day, and we had the place almost completely to ourselves. There was one other family picking berries (Four kids! Imagine the number of berries you can pick with four kids!), but they left shortly after we arrived. So we had our own private berry picking party.
Eva didn't pick many blueberries, but she sure ate a bunch. Which is important too. Yes it is. And she did a good job. Except for the time she was eating them so fast she decided to try swallowing without chewing and then Mike and I had a terrifying 3 seconds where we thought we'd have to heimlich her. Yeah, that wasn't any fun. But other than that, she did great as "Official Berry Taster."
We ended up picking 5 pounds of blueberries ($10. Very reasonable. Especially because the same amount at the Farmer's Market goes for $40. Geez.) which was necessary because not only does Eva Love Berries (have you heard?), but also I've been dying to try my hand at making jam.
So home we went, and by that evening we had 8 beautiful jars of blueberry jam on our counter, a bunch more berries in the freezer, plans for blueberry bars, and a very, very happy (and full!) daughter.
