Eva's grandma and grandpa came for a visit this past weekend (so Mike and I got to go see a movie on Friday night!) (A movie!) (Alone!) (Without our child!) This summer, my mom has had surgery on her hands for carpal tunnel.
Yes. Hands. Plural.
She had the first hand done 3 weeks ago, and just last week had the second one operated on. It's an out-patient deal—they didn't even put her under—but the surgery essentially leaves her without the use of her hand(s) for a couple weeks. And it will probably be a good 6-8 weeks longer before she's fully healed.
So this weekend, we fitted Grandma with Eva's carrier for a while. That way, she could have a snuggle without putting any pressure on her poor hands. It worked like a charm, and Eva was pretty happy, too...I just wish we'd have thought of it earlier in the weekend.
Poor Grandma.
Eva has 6 teeth. I know. I'm amazed too.
Anyway, in our family, when you have 6 teeth you get a toothbrush. So, as of last Monday, Eva is the proud owner of a snazzy blue toothbrush with duckies on the handle.
She loves the thing. She wants to carry it around with her all over the house, and she gets extremely upset when I put it back in its little spot on her shelf. At this point, she's too young for toothpaste or anything like that, but the idea is that she'll get used to having us messing around in her mouth now, and then not fight us so much when she's older and actually needs to brush her teeth. Yeah.
I'm beginning to think the whole "learning how to brush your teeth" thing is going to be a very long process. Because so far, she's enjoyed brushing her hair, her nose, Mama's nose, her eyebrow, Daddy's hair, Mama's teeth, the kitty, her cheek, and the air in front of her mouth (the result of a misguided effort on my part, in which I attempted to pantomime brushing my own teeth so that she might get the idea. She got the idea, alright. Copied me exactly.)
So a few days ago, while changing Eva's diaper, I sniffed her toes and then made a big deal about how stinky they were. You know how it goes. Kids love that stuff. And oh, did she laugh. Mama's a comedic genius!
She then spent the next five minutes sticking her toes in my nose to torture me with their stinky-ness. She only gave up when I picked her up from the changing table and she realized she couldn't reach my nose from that position without some help. Not that she didn't try.
Then, that evening, as we were getting ready to take a bath (for the stinky toes, right?), she got me again. And again. And again. And then she stinky-toed Daddy in a sneak attack (to which I may or may not have been an accomplice.)
Ok. Then yesterday? I watched her giggle like a maniac as she crawled around after the cat, trying to stick her toes in his face. And poor Karl (yes, that's our cat) had obviously never played the stinky toe game, because he just kept walking away from her. He didn't even say "ew!" or fall over from the stench or anything. He just looked a little annoyed.
I'm sorry, I have no photo of the two of them together. I was laughing too hard to go get the camera. But here's a picture from a couple days ago when Eva and I made chocolate pudding. Let's pretend it's relevant.
It began innocently. We were at the Farmer's Market a few weeks back...
Me: Hey! The strawberries are ripe.
Mike: Yes! The strawberries are ripe.
Me: Oooh. They're so pretty. Let's get some.
Mike: Indeed. We shall buy some berries. Here's some money, dear wife.
Later that afternoon...
Me: Eva, would you like to try some berries?
Eva: Hm. Hm. Hm.
Me: Ok, here you go! Chew them up good.
Eva: [inhaling all the berries in one go] Hm! Hm! Hm!
Me: I guess you like strawberries, huh?
Two days later...
Me: Please, Baby? Try some pasta. You like pasta!
Eva: (angrily) MMMMMMM
Me: How about some carrots? Hmmm? Yummmmy carrots?
Eva: (very perturbed) MMMMMMM!
Me: Fine. Want some berries?
Eva: Ba! Ba! Ba! ("Berries!")
A few weeks later. Again at the Farmer's Market...
Me: Oh crap! Mike! There are no strawberries left!
Mike: What do you mean "no strawberries"? We need strawberries!
Me: I think the season is over.
Mike: Gah! What are we going to—hey...Look! Raspberries!
Me: Yes! Yes! Raspberries! Hooray! We're saved!
Eva: Ba! Ba! Ba!
Ok. So this may not be an exact transcript, but you get the idea. Oh? Don't believe me? Think I'm exaggerating? HA! I wish I were. Here's proof (Keep in mind this video was taken AFTER she ate pasta, veggies, cheese, and about 5 previous handfuls of berries):
Yeah. Her diapers have been a bit...fragrant...lately.
It's about time for a Chaz update, don't you think? Lucky for us, his mama sent some pictures and a little note...
"Bath time is getting to be a FUN experience—and forget colorful baby toys, tupperware is WAY better!"

This weekend, we finally got around to putting child-proof locks on a few drawers in the kitchen. Mike took the opportunity to teach Eva how to use the cordless drill. We figure we'll give her the week to practice, and by next weekend she'll be ready to build the bench I've been wanting for the family room. Of course, we'll help her with the sawing. That's just not safe for a one-year-old.
You can always tell when Eva's getting full.
Yesterday, we had a busy day. A fun day, but a busy one. We made a trip to MN for the day in order to celebrate my Gramps' 85th Birthday. It was a beautiful day, and almost my entire extended family was there, so the party was a huge success. Here's Grampa with all four of his great-grandchildren: 
Mike and I spent the day letting other people parent our kid while we frolicked in the grass, playing a LOT of bocce ball. How much bocce did we play? Enough that we felt the need to take this picture:
Edited: I wrote this post last night...you can go ahead and read it. Only now you should read it with a happy heart, because our kitty is not lost. He is found! We found him last night at about midnight, cold, dirty, and hungry, trying to figure out how to get through the fence back into our yard. Good kitty. 
I miss him.
Sorry to be such a downer on the Fourth of July. I hope you all have a blast (HA!!). We're heading over to Minnesota for my Gramps' 85th Birthday party. At which there will be cake. Yummy, therapeutic cake.
