Ok. So. Our Memorial Day weekend.
<sigh.>
On Friday, we headed up to Webster, WI to visit Mike's family because we'd agreed to help hand out flowers and programs at a memorial service at the Northern WI Veterans Memorial Cemetery (where Mike's aunt works.) Well (ironically) we had just passed the Memorial Cemetery on our way to Mike's parents' house when all of a sudden I screamed bloody murder.
I screamed because I had just realized we were on a collision course with a happy little deer that was bounding through the center median of Highway 53. Mike was driving and hadn't seen the deer yet, and I thought he might be able to avoid the poor thing if I warned him in time. However, I couldn't quite get a coherent sentence out, so I opted for the screaming.
Turns out, Mike had no idea what my scream meant, so we hit poor little Bambi('s Mom) at approximately 70 mph in the left hand lane. Then I watched as the deer flew in the air, spun through the right hand lane, and skidded off the highway into the ditch. All in slow motion. And actually it was a good thing that Mike didn't try to stop or swerve or otherwise avoid the deer because we could have easily (oh, so incredibly easily) have flipped over or gone in the ditch or hit another car or many, many other horrible scenarios I try not to think about too hard.
Instead, we barely felt a jolt. And we (semi) calmly drove the 1.2 miles to our exit before we even pulled over to look at the car. Lucky. We were so lucky.
Unfortunately, our car was leaking antifreeze, so we had no choice but to continue to the nearest gas station (Kwik Trip in Spooner, for those of you who like details) and call Mike's dad to come pick us up. From 45 minutes away.
Long story short, we have awesome insurance which covered a tow all the way back to Eau Claire as well as the $5000 or so it's going to cost to fix our poor car (good thing). It's going to take about 2 weeks to fix the car (who's name is Emmy, by the way), but they can't start until our claim is processed and approved, and that's kind of on hold because of all the storms our area had over the weekend which resulted in lots of hail damage and a surge of claims to be processed (bad thing). But Mike's mom was kind enough to lend us her car while ours is being fixed (we're a one car family) so we don't have to worry about finding a rental to get us through (very good thing).
BUT THEN.
We got home Monday evening to find standing water in our basement. Apparently, the floor drain had backed up, and we had a gigantic puddle of stagnant water (we later found out it wasn't sewage, so there's that) just sitting in our basement, musty-ing up our house. Grrrrr.
Also, there's a big swollen spot on the inside of my cheek that I keep biting and it hurts. So. Freaking. Bad. My life is so unfair.
So I'm driving around with Eva in Mike's mom's car yesterday, stewing and grumbling and being on the whole a very pleasant person I'm sure, when I heard a little whirring noise that sounded just like the window rolling down. Then I heard a tiny giggle and a little voice piped up..."What did Evie do?"
Apparently, Eva can reach the power window button in her grandma's car.
My girl can lighten my mood like nobody's business. We giggled the whole way home.
(I'm still wading through pictures, but I've got a bunch uploaded to our Flickr stream. Click on the photo grid you see over there in the right sidebar. I'll be adding more over the next day or two, so keep checking, eh?)
