A few days ago, I saw a great idea on The Toby Show, and I knew I'd be making one for Eva very soon. I got my chance much earlier than I'd expected because Eva was a bit sick yesterday (just a cold), so we stayed at home for the day.
This project turned out to be just the perfect thing for my little sicky: a nice, quiet little activity that she could get lost in as she learned a new skill...buttoning! I let Eva sort through my buttons to choose just the right one to sew onto the end of a length of her favorite ribbon. I did the stitching while she chose "the best colors" of felt to use for the body of the snake. I cut the felt into small squares, cut a slit in the middle of each to act as a buttonhole, tossed them all in a small basket and let her have at it.
After a few Mama-guided tries, Eva got the hang of buttoning. She gave me a big, proud smile, then tucked into the rest of the squares in the basket. When the last square was threaded on to the ribbon, she discovered the joy of unbuttoning...and now she's a button pro!
She told me that tomorrow we'll be making two more snakes--apparently, hers needs a family.
